Who is Baizor?
In Chinese myth, Baizor (白泽) is a famous auspicious beast, second only to the qilin, phoenix, and dragon.
According to texts such as Yunji Qiqian, Baizor is a spirit creature that can speak human language, is snow-white, and has a dignified, auspicious form. Its most remarkable ability is knowing the nature of all things under heaven.
What Baizor symbolizes
1. Knowing all things, wisdom and insight
Baizor could speak human language, knew the nature of all things, and knew the names, forms, and ways to subdue or ward off all spirits and creatures.
Legend says that when the Yellow Emperor was touring the realm, he met Baizor. Baizor described 11,520 kinds of spirits and how to deal with them. The Emperor had this recorded in the Baizor Chart (白泽图), which became a classic text for warding off evil; many households kept a copy.
2. Turning misfortune into fortune, warding off evil
Baizor is the classic symbol of driving out evil and inviting good fortune. People believed that worshipping Baizor or displaying the Baizor Chart would avert disaster and bring peace and luck.
In ancient courts, Baizor was often painted on banners, armor, and screens to ward off evil and protect the household.
3. Symbol of sage rule and prosperity
Baizor’s appearance carried a political meaning: it appeared only when the ruler had virtue and the realm was well governed.
So Baizor stood for wise rule and peace and prosperity. Its appearance foretold a stable, peaceful world.
4. Wisdom and knowledge in a modern sense
Today, Baizor is also used to mean “learned and all-knowing”:
- In AI: intelligence, clarity, insight
- In education: passing on knowledge and inspiring wisdom
- In technology: exploring and mastering the unknown
